Alternatives to declawing your cat include using Soft Claws (covering the nails), providing adequate scratching posts, and keeping your cat's nails trimmed.  If your cat is scratching furniture, you can use double-sided tape, Sticky Paws, or aluminum foil to deter your cat from scratching.  There are many different types of scratching posts, so you might need to try several to determine what type of surface/material your cat will use (i.e., carpet, cardboard, thistle, driftwood, etc.).  If your cat shows no interest in the scratching post, you can use catnip or Feliscratch to entice your cat to use the post.
